Birth Doula Support Blueprint

Blueprint Course

Birth Doula Support Blueprint

Non-medical birth support with training, scope, and emergency boundaries.

10 modules · 32 lessonsStartup ~$400–$1,5001550 hrs/week$59 founding price $79

This course teaches you how to start and run a birth doula practice as a solo operator: honest fit and economics, package design, the on-call setup, pricing, the non-medical scope line and location-dependent legal and insurance basics, getting your first 10 clients, delivery systems, and growth without breaking quality or your sleep. Every money example uses the same planning base case: about $800–$2500 per birth package, roughly 1–4 births per month, about $40 variable cost per birth package, about $80–$200 fixed monthly costs, and about $400–$1500 to start — which pencils out to very roughly $800 to $6,000 a month before tax under stated assumptions — a planning range, not a promise. Replace every figure with your local numbers. A doula provides continuous emotional, physical, and informational support. A doula never replaces clinical care, never performs medical acts, and defers to the birth team when medical questions or issues arise. This is educational content, not legal, tax, medical, or financial advice.

Planning estimates, before tax and before anything you pay yourself — no income is guaranteed. Your own prices, volume and costs will differ; the course walks you through replacing every number here with yours.

Who this fits

  • You want to build a real birth doula practice with packages, pricing, and systems — not hobby pricing forever
  • You can be calm in a room where you are not in charge, and you are comfortable deferring to nurses, midwives, and physicians on every clinical question
  • You can handle outreach, consult calls, and client communication as part of the job
  • You are willing to verify location-dependent rules and any training or certification expectations before taking money
  • You can live with a learning curve on prenatal visits, labor support, and postpartum check-ins while you improve
  • You will track money as profit before tax, not vanity revenue

Honest risks

  • Demand and pricing for doula support vary widely by market; slow months are normal and no income is guaranteed.
  • Skipping location-dependent legal, insurance, or hospital-policy checks can shut you down after you already spent money.
  • Underpricing and unlimited on-call scope are the most common ways solo doulas burn out.
  • Referral concentration risk — one midwife practice or one childbirth educator sending you clients can stop at any time.
  • Quality and boundaries slip when you take overlapping due dates without a backup doula agreement.
  • Giving clinical advice, interpreting monitors, or performing medical acts crosses the non-medical line and creates legal, refund, and reputation risk. Defer to the birth team, every time.

Who should skip this one

  • You want to provide medical care, give clinical advice, or catch babies — that is not doula work and is prohibited without the relevant license.
  • You cannot be on-call for births — this business has real calendar unpredictability, including 2 a.m. calls and 20-hour days.
  • You need a predictable paycheck in the first six months — packages close months ahead of the birth and volume is lumpy.
  • You struggle to stay quiet when you disagree with a client's choice or a provider's plan — advocacy in this role is about the client's voice, not yours.

Honest economics before tax

~4 min read

Base-case planning figures for birth doula support: about $800–$2500 per birth package, roughly 1–4 birth packages per month at a sustainable pace, about $40 variable cost per birth package (mileage, parking, snacks, printed materials, a replacement item in your bag), about $80–$200 fixed costs per month (insurance, phone, scheduling and contract software, professional membership), and about $400–$1500 to start. At that load the arithmetic works out to very roughly $800 to $6,000 a month before tax under stated assumptions — a planning range, not a promise. No income is guaranteed.

  • Low month: 1 birth at $800 − $40 variable − $200 fixed = about $560 before tax
  • Mid month: 2 births at $1500 = $3000 − $80 variable − $150 fixed = about $2770 before tax
  • High month: 4 births at $2500 = $10,000 − $160 variable − $200 fixed = about $9640 before tax — only sustainable with a backup doula and no overlapping labors, so treat the top of the range as rare

Revenue is not profit. After variable costs and fixed costs, what remains is operating profit before tax and before paying yourself. Then divide by hours: a 20-hour labor plus 10 hours of prenatal, postpartum, and admin on an $800 package is under $27 an hour before tax, before counting the on-call weeks. That is why package price and volume both matter.
